Rodenstock

Rodenstock large format lenses are manufactured in Germany and along with a couple of other brands are some of the few still in current production. These lenses are produced in four primary categories which should give most large format camera users a good selection to find what best fits their needs. Few have complaints of Rodenstock's exceptional quality.

Rodenstock Large Format Lenses:

Apo-Sinar-S
This is a great general use large format lens from Rodenstock. The image angle provided is 75 degrees and allows for generous movements in the camera when desired for correction of perspective in product and architectual photogrpahy. Also, when used with a film format that would put it into the tele-photo category it's image circle allows for quite a generous bellows extension. The Apo-Sinar S uses ED (extra low dispersion) glass to eliminate the secondary spectrum. This takes care of the problem of color fringing, even around the edges of extremely high contrast photographs.

Rodenstock Apo-Macro-Sironar:
Designed by Rodenstock as a large format lens specifically for close up work, the Macro-Sironar is exceptional at what it does. The benefits are truly seen when working at ranges producing image scales of 1:5 or better. The image circle is substantial enough to allow for generous camera movements even when working in tight close up studio situations. The image circle diameter increases as the reproduction scale increases allwoing for more movement than similar focal length lenses designed for use at greater distances. The high quality glass provides great looking results absent of any color fringing even at a reproduction scale of 2:1. This Rodenstock lens is offered in 120mm and 180mm focal lenghts.

Rodenstock Apo-Grandagon:
These Rodenstock large format lenses certainly fall into the ultra-wide angle category and in some cases are only suitable for use with a medium format back. Coming in focal lengths of 35mm, 45mm, and 55mm these lenses are designed for wide angle work in small rooms or perhaps panoramic landscape photography. Thanks to it's 120 degree usable image angle the 55mm can be reliably used with 4x5 inch cameras with an aperture up to f/4.5. The Apo-Grandagon uses extra low dispersion glass ensuring no color fringing even in high contrast areas near the edges of photographs.

Rodenstock Grandagon-N
This wide angle large format lens provides an image angle of 105 degrees. Rodenstock has done all it can to deal with problems typically associated with large image angles, including distortion and light fall off at the edges. The 90mm lens has a maximum f-stop of 6.8.
