Nikon Large Format Lenses

Nikon was one of the four major large format lens manufactures (along with Schneider, Rodenstock, and Fuji) until, unfortunately, in 2006 they ceased production. These fine lenses can still be found second hand and often times even new but will become more and more difficult to come by in the future.

As most of the other large format lens manufacturers, Nikon produced a lineup in hopes of taking care of almost any photographers needs. These included:
The W series which was their general purpose lenses, the M series (compact long lenses),
the AM series (macro),
SW series (wide angle)
and the T series (telephoto).

The Nikon W series is the work horse lens of the Nikon series. It can be found at a relatively low price point and doesn't offer huge amount of image coverage for highly technical work involving large camera movements but with a still generous 70 to 73 degrees should be plenty for most photographers doing general work. They are based on a six element/four group design in orderd to minimize chromatic aberrations as well as image curvature and potential distortion at the edges. The large format lenses in this series do come with Nikon's "Integrated Coating" for faithful color rendering.

The SW series of large format lenses from Nikon represent their wide format line and are found in 65mm, 90mm, and 120mm offerings. The construction and lens coating used are largely like those of their more standard W series however these lenses do offer a very respectable amount of coverage - According to Nikon about 106 degrees of it when fully stopped down. Also notable is the available f-stop of 4.0 on their 65mm lens, giving it one of the widest apertures in the large format industry.
